Marantz HD88! *Hi5*

I will say I like how well they sound. So far I've only had them running on my Technics Integrated and SX-1050. :)

When I had them at the office:

Then in the living room next to mom's Cerwin-Vega RE-30

Now I have lugged them upstairs, and am plum wore out. lol

Congrats! I see Big Tuna's fingerprints all over them!! I used to own a pair of HD77's or something like that. It was the one just below yours. I thought the sound was better than Pioneer HPM's and various JBL's.

Nice! I was gifted with a pair of Panasonic Thrusters today but one doesn't work and I had hoped to use them on the book shelf but they're not worth fixing.

He didn't get his paws on these! Though I'm gonna have him re-foam these woofers properly, while also trying to buy the spares off him so I can still enjoy the HD88.

From the sound I described to Big Tuna, he says my woofers were not properly centered from who ever last refoamed them. Good thing I never really pushed them with high power, as I noticed when close to them with some Jazz.

Then some DJ Bass Boy at low volume for me to confirm this better since the bass levels will be a little louder than the highs for me to determine it was the woofers.

So for now, low-level listening only until these puppies get the care they deserve!

Thanks!

You know, that reminds me of a Panasonic DVD all in one unit HT in a box system we had... the front speakers had "super woofers" which were only about 6 ~ 8 inch drivers... when you listen to them on unit they came with, they don't sound well at all, but man those speakers wake up on a good receiver! *eyepop*

Yep, I had a line on them, but I deferred to Cody. After I showed them to him, it's almost as if he became the evil henchman of the Nutty Professor, lol!

Ummm, Sam, they don't have any of my fingerprints.....................yet, lol! HD88's are the monster HD's, next to the HD880/DS940 and M16. Ed May knew what he was doing when he designed his speakers. One of the great things with these is the caps in the Xovers are poly. I have heard some say the top end "screams", but that is due to them not being powered correctly. Ed tuned them in a special Anechoic chamber built to his specs and when they are tuned flat with a mic, they are so clear and accurate, that you think the band is right in front of you. They are a bit long in the tooth, now that they are 30+ years old, but the kinks they develop can be worked out quite easily, and once they are in tune, they sound like a river of milk flowing over cookieland :P YUMMY!

Congrats, Cody, and take care of those beasts.

Well, it turns out that the woofers that came with my Marantz HD88 may have been reconed with aftermarket cones. *fit*

However, many thanks to Big Tuna for letting me buy his spare woofers (among spare tweeters and mid-ranges), I now have all original HD88 woofers. *Hi5*

The low-frequency range has improved rather nicely, the bass is stronger, tighter, hits lower. *drool*

Here's a picture of the two woofers, as you can tell especially, the difference between the back side of the cones! Left is original while the right is not.

Though the LCD monitor sure isn't from that time. Lol

Anyway, I'll post new pictures tonight when I get back home, since I have the original woofers installed. *grin*
