So what's the criteria to determine first use?

How fast you can get the cellophane wrapper off?

- er, okay ....

Clean heads on recording deck. Select music. Clean heads again. Decide if music choice was right. Select better music.

Record.

Enjoy.

How many times have you tried to get a cellophane wrapper off a videotape or cassette in a headlong rush - and it was a wretched struggle that took seemingly forever, when, in comparison, absent-mindedly picking at it made the whole wrapper come off (in one piece) in a jiffy. Analogue gremlins for sure.

Just thinking about "criteria," I would say, of the types of music you enjoy the most, which are the most demanding sonically. Metal can meet those demands. Personally, I would commit to virgin metal a mixed selection (the art of the mix tape is not to be taken lightly!!) of excellent recordings that are also your personal favourites, or high on your list. You may want to record a metal tape showpiece, which also needs well recorded source material as well as more universally liked pieces of music.

For instance, some of the earlier Moody Blues albums were sadly, somewhat murky sounding, whereas the BIS recording of Vivaldi's 4 Seasons is very impressive. Uriah Heep appeared to use different studios for different songs and so some are cleaner than others. The studio verson of "Sunrise" has to be heard to be believed. The Who's "Tommy" can vary a lot. The CD seems strangely lifeless when compared with the Simply Vinyl 200g pressing - which is one of the great prog rock references in the vinyl scene. One of our correspondents here enjoys "easy listening" music, where some great sounds can be found - for instance, I recorded Bert Kampfaert's "Dreaming of the Blues" LP from 1960 simultaneously to CD recorder and to metal tape. Both were excellent - but the source was an exceptional copy in the first place. (I must share this - please remind who is the "easy listening" fan).

Keep us up to date with your project, Hakka.

Good luck!!
