here is a pair of very fine components, pre-amp and power amp, that are the unquestionable ultimate last-word in PIONEER amplification...

C-90 (1987)

NOTE: the C-90 was superceded in 1988/89 by the C-91, a virtually identical model save for the inclusion of S-VIDEO switching, a CU-AV100 series programmable remote, and the deletion of that beautiful longhand in favor of the inane ELITE logo...

like PIONEER says, these are indeed ULTIMATE FIDELITY STEREO COMPONENTS...

I have the C-91/M-91/T-91 combo. While the M-91 is dual transformer equipped and sounds good, I'm slightly disappointed by the cheap wood sides and plasticky faceplates. The wood sides are not made medium density particle board cover in shiny vinyl. Not the same quality as the ES stuff of the same era.

you so sure that the face plates are "plasticky"? i have a PD-91 CDP from this very same 1987/88 lineup. the face plate is an aluminum base, black-anodized and finished in real japanese urushi laquer. that is what gives it that shiny, lumenescent appearence. to the best of my extensive knowledge, this finish is shared by all of the PIONEER Reference/ELITE products, from inception in 1987, to sometime around the early/mid 1990's when the line started taking it's semi-gradual decline towards it's current close parity with PIONEER's standard products...

I have an M-90 in my main rig. I used to have a C-90 to go with it but I sold it and replaced it with a C-72 which can handle more inputs. :)

The meter cover is plasticky. The black finish, while nice, looks too much like plastic. I'm very disappointed with the wood sides, while are vinyl covered that easily delaminates at the edges because of the relatively large wood chip partical board.

those are stunning looking components by Pioneer. I hope to own that combo or the ones similar to those some day. It's very sexy gear.. I like the side panels myself.
