Probably the last best reel to reel tube deck Revox made before staying with solid state. Love to hear one of these.

They are "reely" nice decks especially if you can find the rarer 1/.2 track high speed version with 7.5/15 ips. I have 3 of them. Two are quarter track 3.75/7.5. One of those in non functional for now. I also have one 1/2 track high speed version. I've used it for making live recordings of a local bluegrass band and it worked great for that. I hate to say it thougb but my Tandberg 64X sounds a little better than the quarter track G36 machine at the same speeds. The G36 is not bad but the Tandberg has better high freq response especially at 3.75 ips.
I added a pic of each of the 2 working G36 units.

How do those old tube decks sound compared to solid state units? Anyone?

Some the solid state decks may have better frequency response then many of the tube decks due to newer type heads, higher bias freqs etc. That being said I prefer the sound of tube decks in general because they usually have much more natual sounding midrange. Of course there are some crappy sounding tube decks out there as there are also some very nice sounding solid state decks. I've done a lot of live recordings and I think the tube decks excel at recording and playback of things like female vocals, string instruments etc...

Until the Revox B77 came out the tandberg crossfields always sounded better at 3.75 ips.
How heavy is the G36? I know the tube Sonys and Akais were very weighty.

According to my Revox G36 cervice manual its 45 lbs....It weighs less than my Akai 345 which is 72.6 lbs.
