I was just wondering. What is an "Anti Resonance Cassette Mechanism"? what is "Super Avilyn"? and what is "MOL"? Are some of these marketing or buzz words?
I think it would be great if there were some sort of glossary of terms pertaining to cassettes. Does anyone know of any in existence? I would be willing to compile something, but it would require a LOT of research.
Thanks

well, "Anti Resonance" is just that. the cassette shell has been specifically designed to damp resonation and micro vibrations from transport in the cassette deck.
"Super Avilyn" was TDK's name for their most famous house recipe of tape emulsion. and "MOL"? well, sorry, your guess is as good as mine...

I'll try here. First off MOL is Maximum Output Level which it think means the total recorded volume the tape will take before it hits the limit. Someone correct me if Im wrong.
Super Avilyn was the particles on the tape used to make up the recordable layer on TDK tapes. For a while Maxell had Epitaxial which is their version of these particles. Someone can fill in here what shape and material these particles were.
And anti resonance mechanism was usually a super strong shell that obsorbed vibrations the tape made while in use. Usually made from a special type of plastic. Sony Metal Master, Denon MG-X, and Maxell XL-S/ Vertex tapes were examples of this type of shell.

MOL = Maximum Output Level, or a measure of how much signal the tape can support before saturation.
Super Avilyn was TDK's name for it's tape formulation used in the SA series of tapes.
Anti-Resonance Cassette Mechanism might be buzzwords, but it referred to Maxell's attempt to make a tape shell that would not vibrate or pick up harmonics from the tape rotating inside the shell and sliding against the shell sides. Since they shells were symetrical, they tended to have vibrational nodes. Modifications to the shell were claimed to have solved this. Marketing hype? Maybe, although they are some of the more sought after old tapes.

I think the anti-resonance shells were touted by both TDK and Maxell under quite a few different names over the years.
Anti-Resonance Rigid Construction III Cassette Mechanism.
Super Precision Anti-Resonance Cassette Mechanism.
Super Silent Phase Accuracy Cassette Mechanism.
High Resonance-Damping Cassette Mechanism.
and no doubt other names. Probably just a way of saying our new cheaper thinner shells are just as good as the old thicker nicer ones that we never bothered to mention in the past. :-?

A glossary of audio/taping terms WOULD be a very useful asset to the site. But it would take a lot of effort to chronicle. But if someone wants to take the trouble to lay out the pieces, I'll be glad to compile it into one post and stick it. Or. If someone else wants to collect it all in one post, even better. I'll throw some terms out off the top of my head to get you started. Surely some of you can add to and expand this list:

Images would be a bonus, such as this one of a transport mechanism of a CR-7A/E.

Hi Graffias,
I think this would be highly useful for many, especially the newly initiated. I have data on tape formula, some construction info, metallurgy, head construction, and most of Naks patent specifics. Some gaps though. SA is an interesting one. Super Avilyn is a three part alloy or particle composite. I should have the 6 major stages of development (needle size/gauss ratios) which I will put up. I haven't got all the annual changes in particle orientation though (per IEC and other reasons).
Big thing you started.
Cheers - MH

Here are some more terms. Also, I do have the capability of creating PDF documents if we want to go that way.
XDR - Expanded Dynamic Range
HX-Pro (maybe covered under Dolby?)
IEC Types
120 and 70us How and why are EQ curves measured in microseconds?
Transport

I haven't forgotten about this project yet either, I'm still brainstorming on how to execute it. :-)
I may need some help with some of the definitions though!
