HiFiEngine has the SM if you're handy with electronics. Sounds like one of a few things: (a) Hall-effect transistor isn't sensing tape movement, has failed, or is dirty. (b) belt to the tape counter might be too slack, or missing. Does the tape counter move? Usually belt movement to the tape counter triggers the Hall-effect IC in (a). (c) Dirty controls that are not providing a clear logic signal to the deck. (d) Idler wheel drive not taking up tape supply.

I have a DRM-710 and I'll poke around inside and see if it's near the same as the DRM-800.

my baby, the DENON DCD-1500 CDP, will most likely be the only DENON product i'll ever own. i'm fairly sure that i'll be able to self service most problems it may encounter down the line. i am convinced that there is no easier CDP to work on as it is a very elegant, modular design. when the laser diode dies, i will easily be able to lift out the transport assembly and subsitute another copy from a donor 1500. further, when the tray movement was beginning to get rough, i oiled the roller wheels and the contact areas of sliding, and now the movement is smooth as silk. i honestly believe that in the DCD-1500, i found a CDP to last the ages...

i am sorry, AK was my very first forum experience. i learned my lesson there regarding my gear pics having dolls in them. i still have one to learn though regarding "threadcrapping" again, i apologize for my transgressions...

I've got 4 Denon cassette decks. I love them. Two (2) DRM-540's, one (1) DR-M20, and one (1) DRM-710.

just to protect my honor as a "PIONEER Princess" i still have, and always will have a PD-91. i no clue of it's performance, as i have yet to service my non-functional copy, or aquire a fully functional (and at least near-mint) example, but i DO know that while the DCD-1500 is a reliable, easily serviced workhorse, the PD-91 is a very pretty, but very persnickety pill of a player...

If you can't get the SM, PM me with an e-mail address and I'll send it to you or upload it to USendIt.

I hope you guys don't mind if I bump this old thread.
My reply is on topic at least.

From '99-'08, I worked for the rep firm who represented Denon consumer in the Midwest, so I have some info that may be useful to the crew here.

Denon's service department used to be located in the far western Chicago suburb of Itasca, IL up until a few years ago. One of the techs in this facility, Carol Whitmeier, was well known as the go-to person for all Denon tape machines for many years.

Since the closing of the Itasca service center, Carol can be found at Electronics Express in West Chicago, IL. EE is a Denon 'Super' Service Center, which means that they get preferential access to the remaining cache of Denon parts which may not necessarily be available to the average neighborhood audio repair guy.

On the 15-20+ old machines that most of us may be dealing with,m this is very important note vs. just taking it to the local audio repair guy for a tuneup.

Jim McGinnis is the go to person at Denon for all things related to that era.

DR-M44 is a really nice deck...
If the locals here cannot dig one up, try to reach out to Jim McGinnis at Denon to see of they have a spare one they can scan and send to you.

Matt Good from Denon training was able to help me out with a manual for an old POA amp that a client had. (I think he just called Jim) :)

Thanks 2ndRick,
This is the type of information that is important to have at hand. I have had to send some studio equipment to D&M service which I think was in CA.
Too bad I did not have this earlier but I don't work in broadcast full time any longer.
His problem is a minor mechanical or electrical which any tape deck Tech. would be able to figure out in not much time.
