I found two of these, both reels in like-new condition, in their inner bags and original boxes, at an SA about a year and a half ago, along with quite a few reels of tape (which I bought for no more than $1.50 each).

What year(s) were they made, or any other info? Thanks!

Can't tell you an exact year, but I'd bet a better than 99% probability that they are from the early to mid 70's. Those years were the high water mark of the era. And that three spoked 7", that's definitely a rare piece. Looks to be in pretty good condition on top of that. It also bears a striking similarity to Teac's version of the same reel from around '74. I believe that Pie Oh Near switched to the six-spoke reels (similar to some early TDK and final version Teac models) at the time the RT-707 and -909 decks came out. That was what in '79 or '80?

It would be pronounced "pai oh ni a"
In katakana, パイオニア
パ = pa イ = i オ = o (short o as in box) ニ = ni ア = a (short a)

thank you! there is a song from the 1992 anime "TENCHI MUYO" called "I AM A PIONEER" in which the female vocalist pronounces pioneer in that exact phonetic manner as you say; "PAA-EE-OH-NEE-AH" check it out...

It's no so rare, it's seen usually at ebay and other sites. The PR-80 is pre-707, so it was sold before 1977.
