This deck is new to me but been around since about 1979 according to the Vintage Cassette site. I picked it up for about $20 and am having the shop I use give it some attention right now. Getting kind of antsy to get my new baby back so I can play some tape and record some too. I'm hoping they can put lights in the VU meters but understand the bulbs are not an easy find. So I told them if they can't find the right ones don't worry about that I can put some soft light on the face to brighten them up using some battery powered led lights.

This one can play/record normal, type II, and metal. Although I have never used metal tape in all the years I had my JVC KD-D3. Might or might not with this one unless I can come up with some money for one of those Phoenix tapes some time. *thumbsup* It also has Dolby B another *bigthumbup* from me on that too.

I still haven't found an owners manual for this one. Hi-fi engine didn't have it listed so I have some questions for owners/users of similar tape decks. Mainly during record do you push play and record or just record? I just have the feeling I am really going to like this tape deck. It is big, heavy, and looks so fine next to my Sansui.

Woohoo, just found out today the Akai is ready. I'll be picking it up Friday. Also have an answer to my question about the record function so I am ready to do some tape recording and listening. *headtunes*

Woohoo, picked up my 706 today and it is playing nice. There is a little flutter on playback but they told me at the shop it will have some for a while due to lack of use. The guy that serviced it said it looked like it had not been used in years so play it and record on it for a while and see how it works out. I think he likes this deck as much as I do, they had it set up in the shop playing tapes yesterday. *grin* *headtunes*

Congratulations! My little 702D I fear needs new heads. I'm hoping to find a junker deck of some sort to swap heads. But for the time being it's not in use.

I'm going to keep doing some recording and playing. So far the flutter is still there but I am also using brand new interconnects. I'll give everything some time to see how it sets in.

I did some taping from cd tonight. One turned out ok except for some flutter the second I heard some strange sounds. After doing some recording from broadcast I determined the sound was coming from the cd or the cd player. The player is going in next month for cleaning and checkup so not worried right now.

With this deck setting unused for a long time I expected it might need some adjustments after being worked on. It does sound very good when recording from on air programming.*bigthumbup*

I kept hearing a little something on playback and record and it finally hit me, that's the sound you get when the interconnects are not fully seated. Got the flash light out so I could see better and sure enough on the receiver end both right sides were not fully seated. It can be difficult to see those two. The collars on the new cables seemed a bit tight so I pulled them, loosened the collars a little and they seated perfectly.

I've run this deck about 4 plus hours today and it was beginning to act like it was tired so it is resting now. *tongue* Actually it might have to go in for another little check up. It started shutting off and playing slow but I have 30 days warranty on the work so I want to give it some time. It was sounding perfect after getting those interconnects properly seated. I hope I don't have to take it back to the shop but it's a 31 year old deck by my estimation from the info on vintage cassette. Add to that the fact that it has not been used in years. It could take a while to get it back to full health. *bananadance*

Update from today, the tendency to slow down and stop is back. Guess it's back to the shop to see if they can figure it out. Man I was hoping it would be feeling better today. *crying*

Ahhhhhh, the sweet sound of success. *reelspin*

I recorded a couple of TDK SA-90's today and the sound is sweet. *bigthumbup*

My Akai stopped playing on me a few weeks ago. Well I picked it up from the shop today and it turns out it was just the play switch mechanism was in need of adjustment. *bigthumbup*

Going to hook it back up here in a few and play some tapes. *Hi5*

Update, I hooked it up and played it for a while.....sweeeeeet. I think we, or should I say James, has it set up perfectly now.
