Has anyone ever noticed with the mid 80s metal frame SA-XG and MA-XG tapes that the wind is so tight on these tapes, that decks have major issues trying to do a fast forwards or rewind? I tried one of the I was given and noticed this. Not one deck of mine was able to rewind once it got to around the middle of the tape. I had to use a Bic pen to get it to go. But the deck had no issues in play mode since the pinch rollers helped push the tape through. But I could see this being a problem if you had to search a song on these tapes.

i have had that problem a few tomes with the MA-XG STUWEE gave me. still, the motors on my PIONEER CT-W910R are so powerful, that it would only slow the FF/REW way down. i have not a clue what causes this, but it has only happened a few times before, and has been functioning beautifully for some time now. in fact, i was just using it yesterday!

Could it be you just need to loosen the screws on the shell a little; that they might be screwed in a little too tight? I had a Scotch tape where that occurred & the playback also dragged a little. All I did was loosen the screws & it worked fine. Maybe all the years did something with the tension & they just need to be loosened.

I would loosen the shell, but that kind of defeats the whole idea of a precision shell and such. I wonder if this issue is why they stopped making these tapes this perticular way.

Im not upset on owning these tapes, not at all. Its just more an incovenience that I'll deal with. I also have a MA-XG from the same time frame, so I'll check it too.

An issue with the teflon slip sheets inside the shell, perhaps?
