Rockbox it! http://www.rockbox.org/
The Rockbox mixtape display actually has turning hubs and the tape goes down as the song plays
Actually, I dont listen to MP3s..........the rockbox software lets me play lossless flac files....taking me a step closer to the analog sound, imho
Anyways, I thought you all might enjoy this

Nice.
I have a Sansa Fuze I have thought about Rockboxing.
It adds some nice features.

You can actually record in 16 bit wav and set levels with the rockbox software. I tried it the other night....not as good as a Sony D6, but will work in a pinch

I picked the Sansa because I use Flac and it was very friendly to that format.
And it sounds good.
Do you have any issues installing Rockbox ?

It was a little tricky, but not impossible. I had to d/l the latest clip+ firmware to my computer, then Rockbox 1.2.8. Rockbox needs files from the firmware folder to install on the player

So it is like flashing the bios on a mother board.
Can you go back to original or is it permanent ?

Yep, the firmware has some of the basic os in it for the sanza....rockbox cannot for legal reasons put it in their program.
When I ran the rockbox software, it asked at some point for the firmware file, I pointed it to the file and it loaded everything without an issue.
I did have to uninstall the sanza software from my computer, as everytine I would plug in the sanza, it would roll over the rockbox and put the sanza os back on, so it is easy to roll it back....though once you get the hang of the rockbox, you will not want to do that!
About the only thing I couldnt do was play a 24 bit flac...other than that, it is pretty cool!

Thanks for that info.
It seems like a good way to improve an already good product.
I looked at the new Fuze and was not impressed.
Mine is the 4 GB model and it is too small.
Will have to look for an older one.

What model number is this? I didn't know any Sansa players could play FLACs....or is that something that changing the firmware enabled?

Yeah, I saw it was the Fuze, I just didn't know if there was a model number to it or not. Thanks for the info! I may purchase one and try it myself.

I too Rockbox'ed a Sansa C250, and my sons Ipod(5th gen) Except for the small text on the Sansa, the features are nice, and the response time for find songs is a bit better. I highly recommend Rockbox if you don't like the Ipod software to manage your music too. Using it makes transfering files as simple as a usb HDD.

It seems to work fine.
The usability learning curve is rather steep though.
The software is not very intuitive.
A feature I like is that it does not alter the installed software.
I was looking at the new Fuze+ but most users do not like it.
The older one tops out at 8 Gb which is not very much.
Guess I will have to find an older one to upgrade to.

What is Flac
A lossless audio codec. It reduces the file size without affecting the sound quality at all. FLAC means Free Lossless Audio Codec.

Thankyou for this above explaination - Mighty helpfull after I researched just exactly what a 'codec' is, an does., via wikipedia.
This further's my belief in staying with the Older and simpler technology of Cassette's - Why? - Cause it's simple and in the player's
that play cassettes have BIGGER buttons with raised braille-like texturing of each different function, which is Standard !!! accross
all manufacture's Brand's to operate it with ,,, ever try to operate one of those things [mp3's]& the like - with the SMOOTH buttons or like in semi-darkness - Cant do that.
I dont have the eyesight or the TINY hands to be Fumbling around with one of those little things!
Sheesh -Just to listen to my music from the beginning - I dont need to search for a song it's right where I put it on the cassette, JUST Push Play.....

I use cassettes because I already have a lot of music on them so it makes more sense to copy records to cassettes and have a way to play them (home tape deck, portable tape deck and a tape deck in my car) instead of copying all of my cassettes to a digital format and buying a portable player and players for home and car.
ever try to operate one of those things [mp3's]& the like - with the SMOOTH buttons or like in semi-darkness - Cant do that.
Get a player tat has lit buttons, like a cell phone.

My Cassette Player's dont need to be lit as they have [felt - or feel buttons to operate them with] - The Cassette deck in the 2001 Dakota QC 4x4 'the buttons for operation' lights up in the dark *reelspin*
No Mp3 for me cause then I have to use a computer to operate it & get a nother usb thingy and software maybe and then START a account with that itune place of which I Dislike greatly as it is one's an zero's ... not MUSIC*bigthumbdown*

i turned my ipod touch into a sony wm-501. and a wm-150. and then 3 broken wm-190 and a wm-dd30 and then most recently into a somewhat troubled wm-503.
i didn't actually change my ipod into those things. i more dropped my ipod touch like a hot potato once i got my wm-501 back in september.
i like the convenience of having every single song that i own with me at all times. just in case. but i would spend more time flipping songs than listening to them. and i'd always forget that i had new stuff. plus a song recorded from vinyl to a nice cassette with a nice cassette deck sounds a lot fuller than the digital files i was listening to. even the higher bitrate ones.
it's all a bit more fuss though. i love to use my wm-dd30. it's the best thing i've ever heard, but it seems only 2 of my decks will make nice tapes for it and others will sound dull or distorted due to allignment issues. how frusterating is it to have a new k700es only to find it's not alligned to the wm-dd30?
but it does seem to make tapes that sound perfect on my wm-501. even the dolby tracks well and works like a charm turning an ordinary fuji dr into a great listening experience.
i still use my ipod though. to buy walkman on ebay while i'm at work.

I've just stumbled on this and - just done my 3g ipod 20gb! Brilliant, I can now listen to my flac files on the move. Just got to get a new battery for it as it doesn't hold charge for long. I could have some fun with this, first on the list is to change the rockbox logo to my avatar (in greyscale of course)
