i posted this in the general reel to reel forum by mistake

i thought i would make a wireless remorte for my Akai GX-77.
The original ones (RC-21 and RC-90 are waaay too much money, and there is someone selling an aftermarket one on ebay, so it can be done.
From the GX-77 schematic the remote plug is wired parallel to the front panel switches, so a simple momemtary relay wired up should work.
I bought an IR relay (K224 + K224E + K224T) kit from Oatley Electronics with 7 channels. put it together and wired the relays up. I bypassed the remote socket and wired the relays to the jumper block on the syscon board.

It works!!! I used stop, play, ffwd, frev, pause. i didn't try rec, but that should work too. If you order the kit, you should ask for the chip to be programmed for momentary action. Mine is not, so i have to push the button twice to release the relay.

i 'd film a demo of it in action, but both my decks are down *fit*

This would likely work for the GX-646/747 as well, as they may use the same remote.

Hi studeb,

The RC-21 wired remote control works for my Akai GX-747. Do you have to install an eye on the deck's front panel to receive the IR signal? A wireless remote control is more convenient.

The factory IR remote was a reciever with a pigtail. The pigtail went into the jack and the box could be put near the deck. If you google it there are videos of it on You Tube, and there is someone in the UK selling complete kits. I have 18" pigtail, and was going to mount the PCB in a box on the side of the unit. You could perhaps put the IR eye on the front. I do not know how far off the PCB the eye can be mounted. But i like that idea. You could mount the reciever at the back, and not see it. Maybe i need to fix my decks.

U need to get them reels running so u can make a video for us.
I would love to own a remote for my GX-77*Hi5*

Hi Stuart,

I hope these pictures will help with your project. I disassembled my RC-21 so you could see the PCB. I did a little cleaning of the board and contacts, afterwards:

That's great, thanks.
Nothing in there but the switches.
So now i just need a working deck to make a video to demo it for eminence et al.

You're welcome, Stuart.

I have some progress, one of my decks is breathing again. Perhaps this weekend i can get it cleaned and together to make a video.

Also i have heard from the supplier of the kit i used that the momentary programming is not available. But there are other kits out there one could use.

It may be a while before i can put up photos or video so this is what could be done.
This remote would likely work:
http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/elec/ck1615.htm
It should be set to momentary action. You will need power supply, a wall wart would be fine. I am not sure there is enough headroom on board to use the 12V supply there as that kit uses 500mA.

This is a 12 channel and we really only need 7 if we want to record.
The schematic of the GX-77 shows the remote socket parallels the panel buttons. Closing a switch sends a signal to IC1 which then does the work.

To wire the jack, there are 9 pins, the center is not used.
The top pin 9 is the common, this is wired to the open side of every relay that will be used. the other pins are wired each to a relay. The jack pin order is:
1 Pause
2 FF
3 Rew
4 Fwd
5 Stop
6 Rev
7 Rec
8 NC

You could use some Cat 5 cable, that gives 8 single wires in a sheath.
I bypassed the jack, and made a header for J16.
