Here they are. This is the high-bias version, GX-90.

I might order a few boxes of those tapes just for the sake of it. I don't suspect they will sell out any time soon.

I ordered a few to try also. I wonder how many they have and how long they will last? I see lots of people lately trying to sell them on ebay.

I'm going to keep buying those Akai tapes until they run out, maybe 3-4 boxes every month or so, just so I can build a stockpile. I was a little apprehensive about buying them, but I read online that they had a pretty stable build & good sound quality. I'm glad to say that they met & exceeded my expectations. These are good cassetes, which is something I can't say for many of the cassettes sold here locally. The Sony HF has an almost total monopoly on blank tape sales here. At Best Buy, Target, & Kmart, that's the only cassette they sell!

I tried to do a little research on these Akai tapes and sent an email asking about who made the tapes and when. Their response was.
Good day,
Our company does not manufacture those units. I'm told that there are other
companies that are also called AKAI but we do not have information on their
company. You might want to try www.akaipro.com.
I don't know why emails from their website get sent to us, but we are
different companies.
Regards,
Customer Care
The tapes say Akai Electric Company on them, so that's where I send the e-mails.
Nice to know the future is in the hands of these young whippersnappers. *el_loco*

Gee, they only have the exact same logo & name.
Take a look @ the Akai logo on their webpage:
http://www.akai.com/index.asp
Now compare it to the one on the tape:

I mean, like you said, it even says on the cassette wrapper "AKAI ELECTRIC CO., LTD. TOKYO, JAPAN."

Well whoever makes them, they are pretty good. I have a few more boxes of the pictured tape type on the way to me, and it's pretty much the standard I'm using for now. Although NAD613 already knows my favorite is the TDK Pro SM!
I like the boxy style of the Akai cases too.

I guess I will email Akai's Tokyo division next. That is if they still have one. :-oo They are now owned by Grande Holdings of Singapore. But the funniest thing is Akai Electric has an Akai Pro division. So it is a classic case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing or has done. :-oo
I guess who cares as long as the tapes are good sounding and inexpensive.

I bought two boxes awhile back because (a) they were Akai, and (b) they were brand NOS Type-II tapes, which seem to be getting rarer every day. I haven't used one yet.

I recently got my 5 boxes of Akai tapes. I pulled one out of the box to take a look. Seems decent enough. Have yet to record onto one though. Good price too.

I think it'd be great to find out some history on these. During my life-in-the-day, I never saw Akai cassettes on the shelves of any store, audio, hifi, or otherwise. The obscure ones you did find were Denon, Konica, Agfa, Nakamichi and so forth. But never Akai. Now here it seems like there a containership full of them suddenly, especially since the Akai name died off for anything audio-meaningful a long time ago. Who made them for Akai? Why are they now flooding (ha!) the remaining market?
I think we need to DESignate a LABvestigator. :D

My AKAIs.
The two SX cassettes were bought around 1992, the C-90SX was around 1989.

It doesn't look like the SX has changed at all. Then again, I don't really know how old those Akai cassettes are that B&B sells.

Exactly what I noticed, the SX on the left is identical to the ones we've been getting.

Close, thanks for posting those pics. We now understand a little more about the Akai Cassette Tapes. :)

my guess is that somebody found a warehouse full of that NOS, and your supplier there bought it up at a song...

I would second that, B&B or someone they bought them from found a box car full of these tapes. :D
