Hi
What was the final demise of Concord? Did they simply go out of business?
Did they make it into the CD age?

I don't know, but they used to make some great stuff, as well as some cheap crap.

I had considered their car audio, along with Clarion, Pioneer and Sony, buying a Sony from Crutchfield.
I hated that Sony, got a Panasonic that was great until a nearby lightning strike killed the rear amp chip.
I finally found a used Pioneer Supertuner II analog with Dolby and music search, 20 or thirty bucks in a secondhand store.
It was a blast! The day I finally bought a car with 1.5 DIN spacing and no shafts was a bit of a bummer...I sold it.

By the time the CX series of head units came out Concord had lost its luster. I was never aware of a sale of the brand name, or other radical change in ownership. What seems to have happened is they just got tired of making car stereos.

I had a car stereo business back in 1986 thru 1996,and I installed a Concord in the wife's Firebird,it had a real nice cassette section, but needed a amp to really shine thru 4 speakers. The tuner was decent, but the Pioneer decks I sold & installed had a great tuner, the Supertuner III.I also sold Blaupunkt,Concord, and JVC. Was Concord a US based manufacturer? I never heard of the brand!

Concord was a great brand.
Their amps were head and shoulders above the entry level stuff from companies like Pyramid, Majestic, Targa, etc. and they came in a little less expensive than the Rockford Fosgate, Soundstream, a/d/s/, Linear Power, Orion, and PPI who were considered the better brands.
They were right in the middle .
Their amps were workhorses, and a lot of dealers used them as the go-to product for ground pounders on a budget.
Their decks were me-too decks, and they were not very popular. They LOOKED nice, which was their #1 attribute.
The JL Audio / Speaker Warehouse team used the 12 disc CD changer, which had it's own controller and could be used with any deck that had aux line ins.
I am not sure exactly what happened to the line, maybe DEI snapped them up like everyone else.

Concord was originally an American brand from the 40's, I think they had some ties with Lafayette Radio Electronics. Most of their equipment from the 60's and 70's was Japanese made, usually by Panasonic. I think I remember something about Harman/Kardon buying the name and that is when they went to car stereos and amplifiers. I remember seeing tons of it in Crutchfield catalogs in the 80's and most people who owned Concord car equipment had nice things to say about it. As far as whatever happened to the Concord name, I think it just sort of faded away.

The Concord home stereo stuff was rebadged Panasonic, and I believe they were distributed along with Benjamin Miracord. The HPL 100 car stereo appeared in 1979, and that company was based in Massachusets. I don't know if they bought the old company or licensed the name. When the car product came out all the home stuff went away.

This is a rare piece. Look for an HPL 118 or HPL 130 (really nice deck). I also think the older HPL 515 had the processor loop for the DBX.

I just picked up a new in the box concord sub from a woman who used to work at EPI until the end, EPI was bought by Harman who also carried JBL at that point, unless I'm wrong I think this is an offshoot of JBL and they were using the EPI facility to store and ship or for manufacturing. It's actually a fairly nice 6x9 mylar cone

I had a Concord car tape deck in the mid 80's and thought it to be excellent, had a great tuner too.
Had it for years until something happened to it (got stolen or failed, don't remember) replaced with a Denon CD unit (p.o.s., was in for repair often under warranty)
Still have a great condition Kenwood car tape deck with (Dolby B AND C!!!) in the garage in need of knobs.

Concord's sister was indeed LEXINGTON!
