Hi,
My Marantz DD82 has developed a problem recording. There is a high pitch sound which comes in during recording and this causes the recording to cut out.
The unit plays recorded tapes okay.
Does anyone have any experience with this and is it fixable? I don't have the service manual. Is there a place in the UK who may be able to help with this problem?
Thanks
Al

Hi, registered so I can reply on this thread. As a DIY-noob I want to share an experience I had with the DD-82.
I had dropout problems. Going from sometimes to frequent, until it just stopped working. This was 2 years ago.
Last month I had to made the decision: throw away or try to repair. Internet has some interesting topics about DCC-players from Marantz (DD-82), Philips (DCC900) and Technics. It seams they are more or less the same on the inside, and suffer from badcaps. SMD Tantalums to be precise.
I decided to open the case and take a look at the small AD/DA-board. Some of them were leaking. Replaced all tantalums with some good small electrolytic capacitors (and one with a nonpolar MKT) and the device came to live again!
Tested the 7 old tantalums. They were ALL dead to almost dead. Quite shocking.
I must be honest, I only use the device as a DAC, but my point is: replace all the tantalums. I've seen 10 pieces or more on the playback unit board. Electrolytic capacitors are not expensive, so it's worth a try...

Ps: English is not my native language. Sorry if I'm not clear enough...

A useful website: http://jonathan.dupre.free.fr/articles/articles.php?id=24&cat=16. I'm not french so can't read what he's saying, but the pictures say it all. Although I think it's done a bit quick-and-dirty...
One thing, why in some cases use higher values (must be explained in the text...). 22uF instead of 2.2uf, and 47uF instead of 4.7uF, seams a lot to me.

Thanks Jake2b for your reply.
I will take a look inside the unit when I get a chance. I have contacted a authorised Marantz repair shop in London and they advised that they can still repair the unit depending on what is wrong with it.
Will let you know the outcome. I still have about 60 DCC tapes which I wanted to use so looking to get it fixed.
Cheers

Hi,
I had exactly the same problem with my DD-82. Switched on the unit earlier this week after not using it for playback for about 4 years. No sound, neither from digital nor from analogue tapes. I found that six caps on the small Read/Write PCB had leaked. One had produced a short on the 8V Vsense track and destroyed the track so that I had to replace it by a wire. Furthermore, one of the analogue signal tracks had been destryoed by electrolyte so that this track had to be replaced, as well. Fortunately, the unit works again now.
