Back in the old days I did something untested... rather than use sticky labels and sticky splice tape to label reels (or fix loose ends of tape to the reels) - I found an alternative type of tape -
Post-It tape. I could easily write anything I wanted on a 1" wide piece (comes on 1" wide rolls and other sizes) and stick it on a reel. Now, decades later - I've been transferring off all the audio, and stripping the reels of SSS tape - or cleaning useable tape. All my Post-It tape labels just peel right off the reels perfectly clean - no residue - leaving no need to use Goof-Off or other attempts at removing old glue based tape residue.
Genius. Try it - you'll like it! :-)
