I read a thread the other day (couldn't dig it up this morning, but I didn't look very hard) in the R2R section and it mentioned doing a fast-wind/rewind on a brand new tape to take out any irregularities in the winding. Is this something you should do with cassettes, too, or is that something specific to reels?

Yeah, I do it with cassettes, especially older ones. I have an old top-loading playback-only deck from Radio Shack that is strictly for FF & RW only.

Cool, I thought of that as I've been opening a bunch of those Akai SX/GXs I got off of BnB and I've recently gotten some Sony HF 90s (one very old one, has the old Sony logo with the dots from the 80s and early 90s on it) and today a TDK Superior D 60 from GW.
Anything I can do to make my decidedly mediocre tape decks sound better!
