At the risk of running afoul of my own site rules, I'll go ahead and post my Type I "stash" for all to view, here in cassettes (or should it be the Gallery?) as your eye candy fix for the day. Being that those tapes are the topic du jour.
Most Type I's are low quality, exceedingly mediocre tapes. But a handful of them out there are indeed suitable for serious high fidelity recording.
Feast your eyes on this stash! Just took the picture this evening specifically for this post.

I don't recall ever seeing most of those type I tapes around, but that's probably because I didn't bother to look for them. The old green Maxell UR tapes were pretty good, I used them to record radio broadcasts.

Those are what make type I tapes worthwhile for music.
I'll post the pics of the Sony rarity and TDK oddity on Norms query thread.

Here's a look at the better Sony type 1s they made from the mid 80s. I'll admit I never saw any of these in stores around then.

Matt -- Most of those are the higher-end Type I's, not cheesy stuff. There's some good stuff in there.

Thanks. I thought so too. even the lowest tape in that mix-the green UR's-are still better than most other generic Type I's. It is my opinion that they are about on par with the late 70's/early 80's UD. And that is a recognized classic of a Type itself.

Matt,
Im aware you put your unused cassettes on a bookshelf waiting for use.
But I'd like to see what racks you are using for your used tapes including cassettes and r2r tapes. I would suspect you have at least as many as I do, but where do you put them all?
I have 4 new 100 cassette wood racks plus got another one recently.

Brax: You seem to like those Sony Type I's. Have you ever tried that now very rare tape-the ES-I? It came out around '91-'92 and had a Type II companion. It was supposed to be a very good tape although I never personally tried it.

Actually I got those pics off Ebay. Im still waiting to get my own of those tapes. I keep getting outbid.
But to answer your question I think I do have one of those ES-1 tapes. I won one in an auction, but have yet to use it. I also have a HF-S tape in my box and it too hasn't been used yet. I got another one recently.

Those Sony HF-S tapes hardly ever come up for sale on Ebay, and if they do, there in an auction with about 15-20 other tapes I don't want. No one ever sells just 4 or 5 Sony HF-S 90.

Funny as all the auctions I've seen recently sell just 1 of these tapes by itself. And the last one I noticed went for around 20+ dollars.
